Conventional pool plasters like marcite and Diamond Brite are some of the most common materials used to line the interior of swimming pools. While they are a durable and cost-effective option, they can sometimes experience issues that require attention. Here are some common problems with pool marcite and Diamond Brite:

1. Staining: Pool plasters can sometimes develop stains from minerals or other substances in the water. These stains can be difficult to remove and may require acid washing or other treatment to restore the appearance of the marcite.

2. Cracking: Over time, they can develop cracks from exposure to sun, water, and chemicals. These cracks can lead to leaks and further damage if left unaddressed.

3. Scaling: Scaling occurs when minerals in the pool water accumulate on the plaster surface, creating a rough and gritty texture. Scaling can be prevented by maintaining proper water chemistry and regular cleaning.

4. Etching: Etching happens when a Diamond Brite surface is exposed to acidic substances, causing it to become rough and pitted. This can be prevented by avoiding the use of acidic cleaners and maintaining proper water chemistry.

5. Discoloration: Over time, the color of marcite may fade or change due to exposure to sunlight or chemicals. This can be addressed through resurfacing or refinishing the pool.

If you are experiencing any of these problems with your pool plaster, it is important to address them promptly to prevent further damage and ensure the safety and enjoyment of your pool.

Alternate to Diamond Brite and Marcite

An alternate resurfacing material that is a faster and lower cost option to conventional pools plasters is the Semco Liquid Membrane. This coating product will bond to the existing surface of a concrete or plaster pool and you don’t have to be a troweling expert to apply it. Once cleaned with Semco’s pH neutralizing cleaners the product can then be applied. It is available in a wide array of colors and you can also do decorative finishes. It does not all have to be the same color.

Apply in 3 coats of approximately 20 mils each for a total thickness of 60 mil. Wait 1-2 hours between coats depending on temperature and humidity. Also, do not apply it in the middle of a hot August day in Florida, it will cure too quickly and you will not get proper adhesion. You can apply with a 1/2″ nap roller or sprayer. For airless sprayers be sure to use a tip size of .521 or larger. After application a full cure of 6-7 days is required, be sure not to fill it up before that window.

After application you have a durable and waterproof material that will withstand time, impact and pool chemistry. For more information, contact us at semcofl.com
